Poker Hand Names (Holdem Hand Nicknames)
Poker hand names can add a bit of confusion to the game for new
players. After all, it’s tough enough to learn the starting value of poker hands
and how to play them properly without having to learn all their corresponding nicknames!
This page is not designed to bombard you with every single nickname you might encounter
at the tables. It is merely intended to be a jump start for learning the most common
poker hand names you’ll hear while playing texas holdem.

An ace to five straight is commonly referred to as a “wheel”.

There are literally dozens of hand nicknames out there. If you play in home games,
you will probably encounter some that aren’t common on the internet (such as a hand
named after a local player). However, this basic list should be all you need to
at least understand the strange lingo you sometimes hear as a beginning poker player.
