3D online poker – the next generation of online poker sites?

As a computer programmer by day, its part of my job description to keep my ear to
the ground with respect to up and coming technologies. As an avid poker player,
that character trait reared its head recently in the form of a nagging question.
What will be the next generation of online poker rooms?
After all, things constantly change in the world around us, why would we think online
poker would be any exception? As I started to ponder the different possibilities,
I decided to Google around for some answers…
My digital travels led me to a website that (ironically enough) read "Next generation
online poker". The company is called Stacks (website).
They are in currently
in the process of developing a 3D poker client. The software is currently in beta
phase, and expected to be finished within months. The site also claims their software
will include a fully functional 2D client for those who hate change.
They have some preview images and videos
on their site if
anyone wants to check them out. I thought they were fairly cool, but I also know that previews
and reality are two different things. It will be interesting to see if they can
attract a decent customer base, and also if the software has a good feel to it.
If it brings me closer to feeling like I’m in a live poker game, I’ll be sold. If
it plays too much like a movie, I will probably stick with the old school client.
Over time, I'm sure there will be other new 3d poker sites that
spring up, but for now these guys appear to be the market leaders.
